" Trois vitraux créés par l'artiste allemand Imi Knoebel pour la chapelle Jeanne d'Arc de la cathédrale de Reims ont été inaugurés le 11 mai 2015 (...).
Un siècle après les destructions subies par la cathédrale de Reims lors des bombardements allemands de septembre 1914, la Fondation pour l'art du Land de Rhénanie du Nord-Westphalie mécène, avec le soutien du ministère fédéral allemand des affaires étrangères la création de trois vitraux d'Imi Knoebel pour la chapelle Jeanne d'Arc. Un geste symbolique fort, en pleine commémoration du centenaire de la Première Guerre mondiale.
Pour cette création, Imi Knoebel fait don de ses honoraires.
Ces vitraux complète la commande publique de 2011 du ministère de la Culture à Imi Knoebel de six vitraux dans l'abside, situés de part et d’autre de ceux de Marc Chagall. Ils renforcent de la présence de la création contemporaine dans la cathédrale.
La création d'Imi Knoebel couvre une surface de 64 m2. Elle est réalisée par l'atelier de maître-verriers Derix à Taunusstein en Allemagne.
Les vitraux d'Imi Knoebel de 2011 étaient une composition abstraite associant le bleu, le jaune et le rouge en neuf nuances. Ceux de 2015 reprennent une, conception identique, étendant la gamme colorée à vingt sept nuances. "

" Brand-new glass works from the great minimalist.
Sometimes art is also a political gesture of historical significance. In the case of Rheims Cathedral, the crown jewel of French sacred architecture, this statement can be affirmed without a doubt.
Heavily damaged in 1914 by German troops, the cathedral was presented with three new stained glass windows by the painter and installation artist Imi Knoebel (*1940 in Dessau), representing a gift from Germany to France.
Knoebel is a "Minimal” artist who, in celebration of the cathedral’s 800th anniversary, illuminated the choir space in 2011 with his six stained glass windows. Since then, he has continued his work in the sacred sphere. He spent three years in an intensive examination of the interiors of the Jeanne D’Arc Chapel. The resulting combinations of luminous colors inside the High Gothic architecture are harmonious and poignant.
This publication sheds light on the process of producing glass façades and documents their creation, from the first sketch to the ultimate installation at Reims Cathedral. "
